SOUND SYSTEM

OUR STORY

Why build a sound system?

Driven by a yearning to experience Roots Reggae as he did growing up in London's vibrant sound system scene, Dub Vader birthed Tuff Tone Sound System. His education came through treasured 1970s and 80s cassette recordings of iconic sounds like Jah Shaka, Jah Tubbys, and Sir Coxsone, igniting a lifelong quest for vinyl spanning from the 1960s to the present day.

A decade after relocating to Sydney, Dub Vader established Tuff Tone to share the profound depth of roots and dub music in the authentic UK sound system tradition. This meant a single turntable, a custom reggae preamp, sirens and effects, skilled MCs, powerful amplification, and, of course, colossal speaker boxes.
Conceived in London, the speaker cabinets underwent a meticulous journey: laser-cut in Scotland, assembled in London, and finally shipped to Sydney. There, they were loaded with drivers, wired, and painted in Tuff Tone's signature gumball red with black zebra stripes.
Tuff Tone Sound System made its grand debut in February 2018, proudly featuring the globally renowned Channel One Sound System.

Sound System Culture

Sound System culture celebrates the powerful music born in Jamaica, carried to the UK by the Windrush generation, and blossomed into a massive underground scene, boasting around 300 sound systems at its peak in the 1980s. The UK played a pivotal role in shaping this sonic movement, which then resonated across Europe and beyond. At Tuff Tone, our mission is to champion and share this vibrant sound system culture and the foundational music that originated from the small island of Jamaica.
A sound system is more than just music; it's a collective of dedicated music enthusiasts who construct and transport towering stacks of speakers to venues. They play vinyl through custom-built speakers and handcrafted equipment, where the selector and operator work in tandem with MCs to deliver an immersive experience you don't just hear – you feel it in your bones.
